School of Physics Fabrication and Characterisation Facilities

Overview of Services

The University of Melbourne School of Physics Fabrication and Characterisation Facilities provide access to a range of advanced fabrication and characterisation facilities which allow development and measurement of device structures for applications in areas including optics, quantum computing, quantum sensing, bio-engineering and more. The broad scope of the research performed in the School of Physics and in collaborative programs with researchers from many sectors of The University of Melbourne campus means that we have a wide range of capabilities including:

Sample fabrication and preparation facilities available:

  • Electron beam lithography
  • Photolithography
  • E-beam evaporation of metals and oxides
  • Thermal evaporation of metals.
  • Wet chemical processing inc. HF
  • Rapid thermal annealing
  • Thermal annealing, in controlled atmosphere/vacuum.
  • Laser cutting
  • Diamond polishing

Electrical characterisation facilities:

  • Helium dilution fridge (sub Kelvin)
  • Deep level transient spectroscopy
  • Hall effect
  • Electro-chemical

Optical characterisation facilities:

  • Optical cryostat (4K)
  • Confocal (532nm excitation)
  • Raman and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy (532nm, 1064nm)

Plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition systems for diamond growth.

Heavy ion accelerators including a nuclear ion microprobe, for state-of-the-art imaging and microanalysis.
